A Pigment of My Imagination

This is what should happen when I decide to paint (anything - picture, wall, chair, etc)
  1. Envision everything that needs to happen from start to finish.
  2. Repeat step 1.
  3. Write down everything that needs to happen from start to finish.
  4. Submit written steps to multiple peers for review.
  5. Receive reviews.
  6. Review reviews.
  7. Make any adjustments to steps.
  8. Re-submit written steps with adjustments.
  9. Review the re-reviews.
  10. Acquire everything needed.
  11. Double check that everything is in place.
  12. Begin painting process one step at a time, careful checking the peer reviewed list before moving on to the next step.
What actually happens when I decide to paint:
  1. Thought - "Ooooh paint, I got this! So, so simple. I totally know how to do this!"
  2. Ruin project.
  3. Attempt to salvage project by using "creative" idea.
  4. Further ruin project.
  5. Attempt to salvage project with another creative brainstorm.
  6. Further ruin project.
  7. Stop before things could possibly get any worse.
  8. Hate universe.
  9. Promise to think things all the way through for next project.
  10. Repeat steps 1-9.

The Ides of March, Men Bearing Gifts, Smiling Wolves

You could beware all the things in the title.  Or you heed these words: beware wigs.

My laptop is in critical condition at a talented friend's tech hospital. Posting may be limited while this crisis is sorted out.

Your sympathy, understanding, eggs benny, big macs, cokes and macbook pros are appreciated.

We Will Survive

From Monkey Goggles:

How to Survive the Bacon Apocalypse

Bacon is fallen. The salty paragon has enjoyed a terrific burst of stardom these past few years — bacon martinis, bacon-filled chocolates, bacon-flavored mayonnaise and other culinary landmarks almost too wondrous to describe — but the recent outbreak of Swine Flu has taken the sizzle off the strip. Baconnaise has become a favorite Jon Stewart punchline (despite the fact that it contains no actual bacon), and in a May 2009 Stranger article titled “The End of Baconmania,” writer Erica C. Barnett declared, “(I’ll take a) fresh radish dipped in butter … over a fatty, greasy hunk of bacon any day.” (lstew's note - I'll be tracking Ms. Barnett down and promptly punching her in the neck and then eating a package of bacon in front of her while she tries to get up)

Thus are the fatty excesses of Baconmania condemned to the freezer-can of history. Radishes. Wow.

I could never give up on bacon. It occupies a dedicated place in my heart that’s both spiritual and potentially life-threatening. Granted, I didn’t jump into the frying pan with the rest of the baconistas – I consider bacon “martinis” to be an abomination of both the breakfast and cocktail hours – but I can’t imagine a hearty breakfast without bacon, and I don’t want to. I love it lean or streaky, smoked or peppered, chewy or crispy. I enjoy simply looking at it – one long, gently bowing strip on either side of my eggs and toast, like edible parenthesis.

However, I completely understand if you’d like to keep your own passion for bacon in check until this plague of Hamthrax has passed. Perhaps you’re leery of blurting out “Hey, howzabout that bacon?” at social functions, where the mere mention of pork-barrel politics could render you suspect as a motorboat riding the wake of a supertanker — a possible baconeer.

It is at that moment, when the eyes of your peers are upon you, that you should burst forth with “Hey, howzabout that mac ‘n’ cheese?”

An electric pause will hang in the air as heads swim and eyes roll in expressions of naked ecstasy. Yes, of course! What better to replace one cholesterol-heavy dish than another, even more cholesterol-heavy dish? A dish that evokes childhood happiness as well as adult rebellion? A dish that could be made at home with store-bought ingredients, or enjoyed in hoity-toity restaurants with the same ingredients at three times the price? What indeed?

And like bacon, thee possibilities for hybrid mac ‘n’ cheese creations are virtually limitless in number. I’ve already seen deep-fried mac ‘n’ cheese balls in some of the finer establishments, and it’s only a matter of time before mac ‘n’ cheese salads, mac ‘c’cheese ice cream and even mac ‘n’ cheese martinis make their appearances. And through it all, we can continue to live the bacon adventure in what will become a judgment-free environment, while also enjoying what a mac ‘n’ cheese renaissance has to offer.

Not convinced? Then consider this: Late at night, behind locked doors and drawn curtains, we can even put bacon into our mac ‘n’ cheese. It’s as perfect an expression of Yankee ingenuity as you’ll ever taste.

Hmm. Now that I’ve said that, it seems like an awful lot of fat and calories to put down in one sitting. You may want to eat a vegetable of some kind afterward to keep yourself from going into shock. A radish, maybe.

Not Prophetic

Take a good look at this, 'cause you'll likely never see anything like it again...

Can I Borrow Your Pellet Gun?

Critters are eating my ripening strawberries. Two knowledgeable gardeners have jokingly suggested a pellet gun as a solution. Hmmm. I think the combination of insomnia and fire arms is a great idea. Look out Alexander and friends!

This is one of my neighbourhood friends, Alexander. He's friendly and almost assuredly full of lead paint.

Birth Control

You know how they have Take Your Kids To Work day? Well I was thinking about another day/night they should have for high school aged people (or really anyone considering bringing spawn into the world) - a sort of birth control, abstinence, safe sex over night trip. The trip would involve staying with a family that had children while the children were puking or having bad colds in the middle of the night. The victim/teenager/adult would be on bucket brigade and mop duty (or carpet stain removal). I don't know, but dealing with multiple puking little ones at 3am doesn't make me horny.

I tried to come up with some pithy slogans for this initiative. This was the best I could come up with - feel free to add your own...
  • Other people's kids: making you less horny since they started puking at 3am.
  • Think you're ready to be a Daddy, tough guy? Explain to your 18 month old why he can't breath.
  • Does puke make you puke? Then keep your pants on!
  • The 100% successful birth control - a combination of other people's kids and abstinence.
  • Don't be a chump. Before you hump, think about a night of runny stuff coming out of their rump. (too far?)
  • Abstinence; it-snot the worst thing that ever happened to you.
  • Cough, cough, cough, cough, what? Keep it in your drawers.
  • Nothin' spells lovin' like vomit chunk covered laundry in the middle of the night!

Things You Never Want To See

Sometimes it's quite disturbing to walk in on one of your roomies making a pattern for the knitted underwear she's going to make her uncle for Christmas. Cough.

Out There Trying New Things

I tried wakeboarding on the weekend. I wish I could say I wakeboarded on the weekend, but I think you actually have to be up and pretending to be in control for at least One Mississippi. Sadly, I didn't quite manage that. I did some thinking about my technique (while watching Shredfest III from the boat) and next year I'm going to be shredding with the best. Or standing for a Three Mississippi count.

Lunch Time Posting On Sober Realities

The past couple of days I have noticed a lot of traffic passing by my building. The traffic is people of a 'younger' nature and they are mostly on foot. Some are on bicycles. I was confused as to why there would be so many kids mucking about in the middle of the day. Then it hit me - a very sobering thought - there is a high school very close to my building and across the street from my building is a convenience store and a pizza joint - these kids are not just out for physical fitness, they're on lunch hour from...sigh... SUMMER SCHOOL. I feel so deeply for these teens. I have done the summer school thing. Once in high school and one summer course for my undergrad.

I know some of these kids have made their own beds by messing around during the regular school year and now they have to lay in them..lie in them? Whatever. But some, like just suck at certain subjects. I failed gr 11 advanced math twice and to get my gr 11 math credit, I took gr 11 general math in summer school. I actually got a great mark, somewhere in the 80s or 90s. My teacher was awesome and very straight forward. He would teach during the morning and then those who only needed a half credit or something would leave. Then he would allow the rest of us to do our homework in class for the afternoon. If we needed help, he would give it. He also told us sometimes terrible stories from his days at Trent or living in Toronto. We small town kids were deliciously scandalized! He had a great format for testing too. Every morning we would have a quiz. The quiz would consist of 10 questions picked at random from the previous day's homework. At the end of each week we would have a test and the test contained questions picked at random from each day's quizzes. Then at the end of the course the exam was questions picked at random from the tests. So if you did your homework, and kept it corrected and corrected your quizzes and tests you were fine. And I was.

That's my story.

Welcome Back To Employment Land

Alors, I have a job.

Starting in early July (after some training in late June) I will be a theatre day camp counselor.

I honestly didn't think I'd get the job....group interview....imagine 11 theatre people, all competing for the same jobs and all asked to talk about themselves. Yeah. Yeah. The nightmare you're imagining is what I sat through and was a part of for over 2 hours.

Related to that, its not the working everyday with the kids aged 6-13, its working with the other counselors that I fear. I was reading the India blog (see previous post) and there was a section about how the 6 of us were working with 190 kids from pre-K to grade 1. And they didn't even speak English. So I think I'll be ok. But its the level of pretense with the artsy adults. I'm hoping that the kids melt right through that and become the focus.

I'll keep you updated on how this is going.

The Dormant Mother In Me

A couple weekends ago I was driving across Toronto and noticed a car ever swiftly moving, nay, dodging and weaving at break neck speeds through traffic. As it caught up to and passed me, I noticed it was an Echo. In my head I scolded the driver "well, obviously he doesn't know about the Echo's poor crash test rating!"

Sigh.

The Hopes Shouldn't Have Been Up

Turns out I shouldn't have had my hopes up to go road tripping with John to begin with. The grad gift isn't able to happen any more. Bring on the monthly payments baby! (throws pennies in the air and begins to dance)

Tread Lightly

Ok, so you know and I know that the roads in the city aren't that bad. I don't discount that the roads in the country are bad, but maybe, well, we got lucky on this snow day and school closure. Shhhhhh. Here's the thing nobody say anything to Jacob or Justin about this. Actually wait, no, say things, but say bad things - like if you work downstairs at RUC and you're getting some coffee and either of them walks in to also get some coffee, can you talk loudly to them about how it took you 15 hours to scrape off your car, and how the roads were so bad and it was 4pm before you even saw a plow. Or if you're talking with a co-worker in the hallway and you see either one of them coming, can you speak emphatically about the 10 car pile-up at the end of your street - even if there wasn't one, say there was (why does it say there is a paper jam, when there iiiss no paper jam) and then say how glad you were to not have to be on the roads. We need to tread lightly here people - if they think they're losing their judgment on snow days, well, we may never see one again.

This Too Shall End

The internet (with phone) returns on Saturday. I'm heading to the Ottawa valley for Sarah and Tom's wedding. And oh man, when I get back there is going to be such an onslaught of blogging. I have a lot of time to think at work and therefore a lot of blog ideas and oh man guys, I have so much to catch you up on. There are a million photo essays to do - more New York, heck more birthday, this wedding, baseball, my new place, plus the aforementioned bridal post and the girl band post. Everything has been brewing in my head.

Thank you for your patience. Some of you have expressed in person or by email that you will be happy to see regular posting resume. So will I baby, so will I. You had better hope that next week is a light work week 'cause you're going to have to spend a lot of time on here catching up with my life, its gonna be like 3-a-day posts. Oh wait, I mean, you better hope you don't have a lot to do in the evening, because I know none of you read this while you are at work because I have a site meter that tells me how many hits I'm getting and when and bosses everywhere, there are none during the 8am to 6pm range. Yes, everything is in the evening, noone reads this during the day. Cough. Sorry, allergies.

Ok, I'm back outside to keep filling drought cracks with soil. A special and very large thanks to my boss for letting me use her husband's computer all this week. She is a fellow internet/email/communication addict. And really, I think she felt that the cold sweats, shakes and possibly that I was passing out in the middle of the lawn due to lack of internet, was really taking a chunk out of my productivity. So really, it was in her best interest to help a sister out. Anyway, thanks Yvonne for helping to stave off death and other terrible things!
